  38. 1.  WHAT IS SNAGIT?
  39. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  41.   SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way
  42.   to capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in
  43.   1991.  In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls
  44.   SnagIt "the print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."
  45.  
  46.   SnagIt allows Windows users to capture an entire screen, an 
  47.   individual window or a user defined portion of the screen.  SnagIt 
  48.   also accepts input directly from the Windows clipboard or a Windows
  49.   bitmap (BMP) file.  Once captured, SnagIt will send the image to the
  50.   printer, the clipboard, a graphics file or to e-mail.

  52.   Captured images can be pasted into other Windows applications such
  53.   as word processors and desktop publishing programs from the Windows
  54.   clipboard or by importing the images from saved graphic files.
  55.  
  56.   Software developers will find that SnagIt's full DDE support allows
  57.   it's functionality to easily be incorporated into other Windows
  58.   applications.  SnagIt also provides MAPI support for Windows 95 and
  59.   NT, allowing captured images to be readily sent in an e-mail message.

  61. 1.1 What is the SnagIt Twin Pack?
  62.  
  63.   Many organizations are in the early stages of the transition from
  64.   Windows 3.1x to Windows 95 or NT.  To assist during this period,
  65.   TechSmith is offering the SnagIt Twin Pack.  It includes a 16-bit
  66.   version, tailored for Windows 3.1x, as well as a true 32-bit version
  67.   for Windows 95 and NT. The setup program automatically detects the
  68.   workstation's operating environment and loads the appropriate
  69.   version.  The purchaser is licensed to run either version and to
  70.   switch between them without further payment. Purchasing the Twin
  71.   Pack provides the benefits of running SnagIt today without the
  72.   penalty of Windows 95 or NT upgrade fees in the future.

  75. 2.  SNAGIT TWIN PACK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  76. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  78.   In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:
  79.  
  80.   o  An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware 
  81.      requirements for your version of Microsoft Windows.
  82.  
  83.   o  Microsoft Windows 3.1x, Windows For Workgroups 3.1x,
  84.      Windows NT 3.5x or Windows 95 installed and configured on your
  85.      system.
  86.  
  87.   o  A mouse or other pointing device
  88.  
  89.   o  For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print
  90.      bitmaps. (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet
  91.      printers that Windows supports.  Plotters are not recommended for
  92.      use with SnagIt due to their inability to print bitmaps.)
  93.  
  94.   o  For e-mail output, a 32 bit MAPI mail client (e.g. Microsoft 
  95.      Exchange) must be installed and running
  96.  
  97. 2.1 Evaluation Package Contents

  99.   Included in the SnagIt Twin Pack archive file (SNAGIT30.ZIP) are

  115. 3.  GETTING HELP
  116. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  118. 3.1 Using SnagIt's On-line Help
  119.  
  120.   SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows Help
  121.   subsystems.  The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information
  122.   you'll need to use SnagIt, except for the SnagIt installation
  123.   procedure. This (README.TXT) file describes how to install SnagIt.
  124.  
  125.   To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then
  126.   Help Index from the drop-down menu.
  127.  
  128.   To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from
  129.   the Help menu.
  130.  
  131.   To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type,
  132.   select System Info from the Help menu.
  133.  
  134.   When you register SnagIt, you will receive a software key that will
  135.   disable the evaluation time-limit and remove all registration 
  136.   reminder screens.

  180. 5.  KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS

  183. 5.1 32-bit Version - SnagIt/32
  184.  
  185.     o  SnagIt/32 hangs on e-mail output on Windows 95 if only 16-bit
  186.        MS Mail has been configured (i.e. MAPI is in use, but neither
  187.        MS Exchange or any other 32-bit MAPI mail client has been
  188.        configured).
  189.  
  190.     o  The captured cursor type is always the arrow cursor.
  191.  
  192.     o  One viewer (LView Pro 1.C/32) complains when loading a JPEG
  193.        file output by SnagIt.  The viewer says "premature end of JPEG
  194.        file" but will still view the file successfully.
  195.  
  196.     o  The Include Cursor option is not active for the Last Active
  197.        Window input selection.
  198.  
  199. 5.2 16-bit Version - SnagIt
  200.  
  201.     o  SnagIt does not support e-mail as an output (i.e. MAPI mail 
  202.        clients).
  203.  
  204.     o  SnagIt does not support JPEG or compressed BMP graphic file
  205.        formats.
  206.  
  207.     o  SnagIt does not support using the PrintScreen key to initiate
  208.        a capture.

  211. 6.  SETUP AND CONFIGURATION
  212. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  214. 6.1 Installation Instructions
  215.  
  216.   The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  217.   application.  You must have Windows, Windows for Workgroups, Windows
  218.   NT or Windows 95 installed prior to installing SnagIt.  Setup will
  219.   automatically detect the version of Windows in use and copy the
  220.   appropriate files during the install.  To install SnagIt, perform
  221.   the following steps:
  222.  
  223.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  224.  
  225.   2. Insert the SnagIt Twin Pack diskette into a floppy drive.
  226.  
  227.   For Windows 95 users:
  228.  
  229.   3. From the Start menu, select Run
  230.  
  231.   For Windows 3.1x and Windows NT users:
  232.  
  233.   3. From the Program Manager menu bar, choose File, and select Run
  234.      from the drop down menu.
  235.  
  236.   For all users:
  237.  
  238.   4. In the dialog box, enter:
  239.           a:\setup
  240.      (If you are installing SnagIt from a diskette drive other than
  241.      the A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the 
  242.      command line above.)
  243.  
  244.   5. Click on the OK button.
  245.  
  246.   6. When you have finished entering the setup information, click on
  247.      the Install button to install SnagIt.
  248.  
  249. 6.2  Uninstall Instructions
  250.  
  251.   If after installing SnagIt Twin Pack, you find it necessary to
  252.   remove the software from your computer, perform the following steps:
  253.  
  254.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows 3.1x and WFW 3.1x
  255.  
  256.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  257.  
  258.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt was
  259.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press
  260.      the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  261.  
  262.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt when Windows Starts" when
  263.      installing SnagIt, delete SnagIt from the Startup group.
  264.  
  265.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  266.      SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm that
  267.      you wish to delete the program item.
  268.  
  269.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  270.      installed SnagIt.  Delete the files SNAGIT.EXE and SNAGIT.HLP.
  271.  
  272.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows NT and Windows 95
  273.  
  274.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  275.  
  276.   For Windows 95 users:
  277.  
  278.   2. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Taskbar. Now 
  279.      configure your Start Menu Programs by clicking on the Advanced
  280.      button.
  281.  
  282.   3. Find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was installed. Click 
  283.      once on the SnagIt/32 filename to highlight it. Press the delete
  284.      key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  285.  
  286.   4. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  287.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  288.  
  289.      Follow step #2 and then find the Startup group. Click once on the
  290.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  291.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  292.  
  293.   5. Run Windows Explorer and change to the directory in which you
  294.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and 
  295.      SnagIt32.HLP.
  296.  
  297.   For Windows NT users:
  298.  
  299.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was
  300.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it.
  301.      Press the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program
  302.      item.
  303.  
  304.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  305.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  306.  
  307.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  308.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  309.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  310.  
  311.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  312.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and 
  313.      SnagIt32.HLP.

  316. 7.  STARTING AND USING SNAGIT
  317. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  318.  
  319.   To start SnagIt, double-click on the SnagIt icon in the Accessories
  320.   group.  (If you specified a group other than Accessories during
  321.   SnagIt installation, look in that group for the SnagIt icon.)
  322.  
  323.   Double-clicking on the SnagIt icon will execute SnagIt and bring
  324.   it to the foreground in its maximized form.  When SnagIt is
  325.   maximized, you may change any of the setup options (input, output,
  326.   format, etc.) from the SnagIt menus.
  327.  
  328.   You can also invoke SnagIt (that is, instruct SnagIt to capture an
  329.   image) while it is maximized, though it will usually be more
  330.   convenient to minimize SnagIt before doing your screen captures.
  331.  
  332.   If you selected the "Load when Windows starts" checkbox during
  333.   installation, SnagIt will start automatically the next time you
  334.   start Windows.
  335.  
  336. 7.1 SnagIt Default Settings
  337.  
  338.   When you install SnagIt, it uses the following default options:
  339.  
  340.   o  Input is set to Screen.  This means that when SnagIt is invoked,
  341.      it will capture the entire Windows desktop.
  342.  
  343.   o  Output is set to Printer.  This means that when SnagIt is
  344.      invoked, it will send the captured image to the Windows default
  345.      printer for printing.
  346.  
  347.   o  Format is set to Color.  This means that SnagIt will capture the
  348.      image with the screen colors intact.  (In most cases you can
  349.      print images using this format setting, even if your printer is
  350.      not a color printer. For additional information about SnagIt
  351.      format options, see the Format options topic in the SnagIt Help
  352.      file.)
  353.  
  354.   o  Scale is set to 1.00.  This means that SnagIt will output the
  355.      image at the same pixel size as it appears on the Windows screen.
  356.      This setting may result in a smaller printed image than you want;
  357.      to adjust the image size, see the Scale topic in the SnagIt Help
  358.      file.
  359.  
  360.   Refer to the SnagIt Help file for additional information on setting
  361.   SnagIt's input, output, format and other options.
  362.  
  363.   You can tell which settings SnagIt is using by looking at the bottom
  364.   of the SnagIt window when the program is maximized.
  365.  
  366. 7.2 Invoking SnagIt with <CTRL><SHIFT><P>
  367.  
  368.   Once you have SnagIt's parameters set as you want them, you are
  369.   ready to perform screen captures with SnagIt.
  370.  
  371.   The default hot-key sequence for invoking SnagIt is <Ctrl><Shift><P>.
  372.   When you press these keys, SnagIt will capture an image (determined
  373.   by the input parameter you selected), and send that image to the
  374.   output device you selected. To invoke SnagIt using a different
  375.   hotkey combination, see the Change Hotkeys topic in the SnagIt Help
  376.   file.
  377.  
  378. 7.3 Using the Mouse to Select Images
  379.  
  380.   You will need a mouse or other pointing device with SnagIt.
  381.   The left and right mouse buttons work as follows:
  382.  
  383.   Left Button     Selects SnagIt menu options, and selects screen
  384.                   regions and windows to capture.
  385.  
  386.   Right Button    Cancels a region or window selection, if you press
  387.                   it before you finish making the selection (that is,
  388.                   before you release the left mouse button).
  389.

  391. 8. REGISTERING SNAGIT TWIN PACK
  392. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  393.  
  394.   Single-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  395.  
  396.   Registration entitles the licensee to install either the 32 bit or
  397.   the 16 bit version of SnagIt and to switch between the two without
  398.   further payment.  The single-user license cost is $39.95. 
  399.  
  400.   Multi-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  401.  
  402.   Registration entitles the licensed organization to install 10 copies
  403.   of SnagIt, in any combination of 16 bit and 32 bit. A single diskette
  404.   is shipped along with the multi-user license.  The 10-user license
  405.   cost is $200.00.
  406.  
  407.   SnagIt is most commonly registered by entering a software key in the
  408.   freely distributed evaluation version.  This immediately removes all
  409.   the registration reminder screens and software expiration dates.  If
  410.   the purchaser would like to receive a diskette there is a $4.95 
  411.   media charge in addition to the cost of the Single-User Twin Pack
  412.   license.
  413.  
  414.   To Begin Registration:
  415.  
  416.   1.  Select the SnagIt program's Help menu.
  417.  
  418.   2.  Select Begin Registration from the menu.
  419.  
  420.   3.  In the registration dialog box, enter the requested information
  421.       in the fields provided.
  422.  
  423.       NOTE: You must specify a name or company name when you register.
  424.             Your registered copy will be personalized for that name
  425.             ONLY.  You will NOT be able to change that name after you
  426.             have registered the software.
  427.  
  428.   4.  When you are finished, select OK. This will create a text file
  429.       called REGISTER.TXT in the SnagIt default directory. This is
  430.       your registration and order form.  It includes a price sheet and
  431.       your Product ID number.
  432.  
  433.   5.  Windows Notepad will now open REGISTER.TXT automatically,
  434.       allowing you to edit and or print the registration form.  While 
  435.       you are editing, please complete any blank items, including 
  436.       quantities, totals, and payment information. DO NOT EDIT THE 
  437.       PRODUCT ID NUMBER.
  438.  
  439.   6.  Return the registration form, with payment, to TechSmith
  440.       Corporation by any of the methods described on the form.  Upon
  441.       receipt of your order, TechSmith will generate your
  442.       registration key. The key will then be sent to you by the method
  443.       of your choice, either e-mail, fax or postal delivery.
  444.  
  445.   To complete the registration process when you receive your key:
  446.  
  447.   7.  Select the Help menu.
  448.  
  449.   8.  Select Finish Registration from the menu.
  450.  
  451.   9.  Enter your registration key, exactly as it is shown, in the
  452.       field provided.
  453.  
  454.   10. Press OK.
  455.  
  456.   Your software is now registered!  All the registration reminder
  457.   screens and software expiration dates will be removed.  If you have
  458.   any additional questions or comments, contact TechSmith by e-mail at

  461. 8.1  CompuServe SWREG Forum
  462.  
  463.   You may also register SnagIt Twin Pack using the Shareware
  464.   Registration Forum on CompuServe (GO SWREG).
